The Brazilian Army has officially chosen the ATMOS self-propelled howitzer system, developed by the Israeli company Elbit Systems, as the winner of its VBCOAP 155 SR competition, aimed at modernizing its artillery fleet with high-tech equipment. As highlighted in an article by Army Recognition, on August 17, 2023, the Brazilian Ministry of Defense unveiled its plans to acquire and develop 36 Viatura Blindada de Combate Obuseiro Autopropulsado 155 mm Sobre Rodas (VBC OAP 155 mm SR), which translates to 36 armored self-propelled howitzers. On March 17, 2024, the Brazilian Army, through its Logistics Command (COLOG), revealed the contenders for its Wheeled Self-Propelled Artillery Vehicle (WSPA) project. This announcement showcased the models that met the detailed criteria specified in the project's tender. The models in contention included China's SH15, Israel's ATMOS, France's CAESAR, and the Czech Zuzana 2. Today, the Brazilian Army has officially chosen Elbit Systems' ATMOS, a self-propelled howitzer system developed by the Israeli company, for its project.
The ATMOS system, which stands for Autonomous Truck Mounted Howitzer System, stands out for its increased mobility, mounted on a 6x6 or 8x8 truck chassis, and its compatibility with NATO standard 155 mm ammunition. It was therefore preferred over other international competitors, including the French CAESAR, the Slovakian Zuzana 2, and the Chinese SH-15.
Equipped with a fully automated loading and laying system, the ATMOS can fire three rounds in 15 seconds in burst mode and sustain a firing rate of two rounds per minute for an hour. With extended-range ammunition, it can reach targets up to 41 kilometers away.
In addition to its firepower, the ATMOS incorporates advanced fire control, navigation, and aiming systems, which enhance its precision and operational efficiency. The vehicle also offers enhanced crew protection, with a fully armored cabin and gun, and a system for protection against nuclear, biological, and chemical threats.
The ATMOS 2000, a truck-mounted, wheel-based self-propelled howitzer system, has been designed and manufactured by the Israeli company Elbit Systems since 2001. Capable of being manned by a crew ranging from 2 to 6 members, the ATMOS 2000 highlights its adaptability and ability to address a variety of operational scenarios. It features weapon traverse capabilities of 25 degrees left and right, and an elevation up to +70 degrees, allowing for exceptional maneuverability and targeting precision.
With a length of 9.5 meters and weighing 23,000 kg in its 52-caliber version, the ATMOS 2000 combines firepower and mobility, making it a preferred choice for armed forces globally. Israel, the producing country, has seen its artillery system adopted by several nations including Azerbaijan, Botswana, Denmark, Cameroon, Colombia, the Philippines, Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia.

Embraer provee de radares mejorados SABER M60 al EB
Embraer Delivers Upgraded SABER M60 Radars to Brazilian Army
Joe Saballa || The Defense Post
Multinational aerospace firm Embraer has announced the delivery of two upgraded SABER M60 radars to the Brazilian Army.
Often attached to a low-altitude anti-aircraft defense system, the M60 radar is used to protect critical military infrastructure, including bases, command posts, and weapons storage.
It can track up to 60 targets simultaneously at a range of 59 kilometers (37 miles) and an altitude of 16,400 feet (5 kilometers).
Additionally, the SABER radar can be reconfigured to suit various missile-based weapon systems, anti-aircraft cannons, and other air defense systems available in the Brazilian military.
According to Embraer, the system features a low probability interception technology that allows it to track enemies without being easily identified.
It is also easy to transport and can be assembled in 15 minutes.
“Acquiring the SABER M60 radars is part of the 2020-2023 Brazilian Army Strategic Planning and expands the Land Forces’ operational capacity,” the company stated.

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is eyeing to acquire a total of 24 A-29B Super Tucanos. PAF is currently operating 6 Super Tucanos which were commissioned to service under 15th Strike Wing in October 2020.
“This is a project that was 12 years in the making as part of the revised Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program (AFPMP). The project has fi nally come to fruition and six (6) aircraft were offi cially commissioned to the Philippine Air Force, under 15th Strike Wing, on 13 October 2020, with additional 12 more aircraft by 2022 and six (6) more on the way ahead for a total of 24 Tucanos soaring the Philippine skies by the end of 2024,” PAF said in its recently release publication Flight Plan: New Hope.
“The A-29B Super Tucano is a durable, light attack aircraft, Forward Operating Base (FOB) capable with a low maintenance and operational cost, with the capability for day and night operations and non-precision and precision guided air munitions delivery,” it explained.
PAF said that the Super Tucano is highly maneuverable and capable of reaching a maximum speed of 590 km/h or 320 knots.
“It has a low heat signature and incorporates 4th generation avionics and weapons system (electro-optical and infrared system capable, laser range finder and data link, net centric data recorder) inside a modern and functional cockpit,” it added.
“With these capabilities, the PAF will use the new aircraft for Close Air Support (CAS), Light Attack, as well as Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions,” PAF said.

“While most of us were asleep at this side of the globe, Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer has started flying the A-29B Super Tucanos bound for the Philippine Air Force from Embraer’s production facility in Sao Paulo City, to the eastern Brazilian city of Recife, which is the staging point for their delivery travel to the Philippines,” MaxDefense Philippines said in a Facebook post August 30.
The Philippine Air Force (PAF) said in one of its publications that it is “expecting the delivery of six (6) Super Tucano Close Attack Aircraft from Brazil this year. This will be another game changing aircraft that will enhance the attack capability of the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines).”
According to Embraer, the aircraft in PAF service will be deployed for close air support, light attack, surveillance, air-to-air interception, and counterinsurgency missions.
“We are honored to be selected by the Philippine Air Force, our second operator in the Asia-Pacific region, and with the confidence expressed by our customer,” said Jackson Schneider, president and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security in 2017. “The Super Tucano is the best light attack aircraft in the market and we are confident that it will accomplish with excellence the missions it was selected for.”
