Indonesia Cancelled AN/TPS-77 Radar Plan

MFH has earlier reported that the US Government will be donating three AN/TPS-77 long range air defence radars to Malaysia and Indonesia as part of its Maritime Security Initiative (MSI). It seems that the Malaysians have been at the right path towards making such plan a reality following recent training held by Washington Air National Guard (ANG) for Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) personnel involving several types of radars including the AN/TPS-77.

On the other hand, it seems that the Indonesians have cancelled the plan although no details have been given over the reasons as to it was cancelled. That said, usually such cancellation was not from the US government, but from potential recipient country as could be seen from the recent cancellations by the Malaysian Governments on the former US Navy SEAL’s SOC-V special operation craft and the former US Army’s M109 self propelled howitzers.

Despite this, the cancellation of AN/TPS-77 by Indonesia will not affect the country as it is striving towards procuring modern, newer built air defence radars to boots its airspace surveillance.

Reino Unido: Programa de IFV Ajax podría cancelarse al costo de 4.8 mil millones USD

Ajax Programme Could be Cancelled As $4.8 Billion Fiasco Continues To Draw Criticism

Jesse, War History Online

The highly public Ajax fiasco continues as Defence minister Jeremy Quin said he is unable to guarantee that the vehicle if it even arrives, will ever be used. The $4.8 billion development of Ajax has been plagued with problems, setbacks, and design flaws. Soldiers testing the vehicle have been injured by its extreme noise and vibrations, issues that have still not been resolved.

Defence minister Jeremy Quin has informed MPs that he cannot promise that the Ajax will ever see use, due to its associated problems.

The Ajax

The Ajax programme began a decade ago when the Ministry of Defence made a deal with General Dynamics to produce the vehicle. By 2014 the programme was moving along, but began encountering issues a few years later when the MoD feared the Ajax may already be obsolete, resulting in a design overhaul.

During trials, it was discovered that the vehicle was had a whole host of problems. These were so severe that they actually injured crew members.

It produced powerful sounds and vibrations that gave crews back and joint pain, numbness in the hands and feet as well as short-term hearing problems and nausea. Around 310 soldiers have had to seek medical attention after crewing the Ajax. Of these, 30 received medical treatment.

In addition to the awful crew conditions, the Ajax itself performed terribly; unable to fire on the move or reverse over obstacles just 20 cm high. It was intended to be a ‘light tank’, but has exceeded 40 tons in weight, limiting it to the C-17 Globemaster for transport, after a partial dismantling.

The issues were so bad that trials of the Ajax were paused between the end of 2020 and early 2021. When trials resumed crews were given hearing protection and told to not exceed 20 mph to limit vibrations.

So far, only 26 out of 589 vehicles have been delivered.

The MoD isn’t happy

Mr. Quin said to the House of Commons “I cannot promise 100 percent we will find a resolution to these issues, but we are determined to work through with General Dynamics. We will not accept an initial operating capability until we have a clear resolution to the issues on noise and vibration… We need a vehicle that works and which is fit for purpose and that is what we’re determined to deliver.”

“I have previously described Ajax as a troubled programme. It is. But that does not mean that the problems are irresolvable,” Quin added.

Conservative MP and Defence Select Committee Mark Francois used more scathing words, calling the Ajax a “steaming heap of institutional incompetence.”

Francois added that “It is heavier than a Sherman tank and as stealthy as a Ford Transit full of spanners. And, if you are giving people steroid injections after having been in the vehicle, that tells you everything.”

The scandal has highlighted worrying issues in the MoD’s process of sourcing new equipment, namely former British Army generals who are hired by defense contractors for their knowledge and contacts within the MoD. They then secure contracts for the company, but not for the benefit of the UK.

These issues and the huge costs involved with the project have enraged MPs, who are now demanding answers for how the seemingly doomed project has been continuously funded. Some have simply suggested to the government that they should cut their losses and try to claim back as much money as possible from the project with ‘liquidated damages.’

However, the returns will likely be small, as the $4.8 billion (£3.5 billion) spent on the project was given to General Dynamics when the project was on the right track. As a result, this money will never be returned to the taxpayer.

It is currently unknown exactly what will happen with Ajax, but it seems the MoD and ministers will allow General Dynamics a few months to rectify the problems. After this, a battle between the UK government and General Dynamics is looking likely.

¡Bien hecho! USAF se queda con los 6 F-35 que iban a Turquía

US Air Force to keep six F-35 jets sold to Turkey

FeaturedWar is Boring

To play off of the famous line from the “Soup Nazi” of Seinfeld fame, “No F-35 for you.”

NATO’s arguably worst partner state has been denied the F-35 by the United States, and the move comes as both expensive and advantageous for US aerospace mogul Lockheed Martin.

Six multirole aircraft were earmarked for Turkey, but the Eurasian nation’s purchase of Russian S-400 missile systems effectively made sure that the aircraft would never make it to their final destination.

According to Ekathimerini, the US Senate Armed Services Committee said on Thursday it had authorized $9.1 billion to obtain the F-35s alongside an existing order.

It is unknown which branch the Turkish F-35s will go to, though it is likely that they will be brought into the US Air Force’s inventory due to them lacking the more Navy and Marine Corps-friendly features.

The ninety-five F-35s already being procured will actually exceed the United States’ desired (budgetary) number by fourteen, and the six that were supposed to go to Turkey will likely require some exchanges in avionics and other “export” features to bring the aircraft up to spec.

Vietnam cancela proyecto Sigma 9814

Vietnam Canceled the Sigma 9814 Project

Sigma 9814 corvette (photo : KienThuc)

Model of a Sigma 9814 corvette in theoretical Vietnamese service. Aside from accommodating Vietnam's Russian Kamov helicopters, the ship would have been armed with:

  • 8x MBDA Exocet MM40 Block 3
  • 12x MBDA MICA VL surface-to-air missiles (in VLS)
  • 1x Oto Melara 76mm main gun
  • 2x Oto Melara MARLIN-WS 30mm guns

Despite negotiations with Damen from 2011-2014 to order 4 corvettes (2 built in the Netherlands, 2 locally built in Vietnam), the plan was ultimately dropped because of one problem: the design's west-bloc weaponry.

Due to historical events, the Vietnam People's Navy has always been east-bloc oriented. Had the Sigma been purchased, Vietnam would have had to go out of the way to buy western cannon ammunition & western missiles for the corvette. Considering Vietnam's history, politics, etc, very few countries would have been willing to sell that to Vietnam. Acquiring Exocet missiles would have been the most difficult.

It wasn't until the transfer of South Korean Pohang-class corvettes that the VPN started using "western-oriented" ships. Even they have been converted for Vietnamese standards, now fitted with Russian missile systems and machine guns.
