Those watching National Defense News last night were treated to 'red eyes' - a demonstration of the Shtora-1 active protection system on the PAVN's T-90S/SK MBTs. This demonstration took place in front of a visiting delegation to the 201st Tank Brigade.

The Shtora-1 was designed to disrupt SACLOS ATGMs along with laser rangefinders/target designators, though it should be noted that some newer modern generation of ATGMS have been designed to bypass the system's IR dazzlers.

It would be interesting to see how well the Vietnamese Shtora-1 APS performs against the threat of enemy anti tank weaponry, specifically the Chinese "Red Arrow" series of anti tank missiles.

"The training units of the PAVN Land Force have already started to master the T-90S main battle tanks. The crew will be trained to drive the tanks and cross rivers with the use of deep water fording kits," said the source.

According to the 2016 annual report of Rostec`s Uralvagonzavod corporation, the manufacturer of the MBTs, a contract with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for 64 T-90S and T-90SK (K for Command, Komandniy) MBTs was signed in 2016. The Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV) is reported to hasve received the first batch of 32 MBTs in late December. The PAVN now operates T-90S, Type 59, T-54/55, T-62, PT-76B, and even T-34/85 tanks.

According to the UVZ, the T-90S MBT has a combat weight of 46.5 (+ 2%) t, a crew of three servicemen, an average unsurfaced road speed of 35-40 km/h, a top speed of 60 km/h, a power-to-weight ratio of 21.5 h.p./t, and a range of 550 km. The MBT is armed with a 2A46M 125 mm smoothbore dual-axis stabilized gun (an ammunition load of 42 rounds), a 7.62 mm coaxial machinegun (an ammunition load of 2,000 cartridges), and an anti-aircraft 12.7 mm heavy machinegun (an ammunition load of 300 cartridges). The tank`s guided missile system has a firing range of 100-5,000 m. The MBT can cross a ditch of 2.6-2.8 m, a wall of 0.85 m, and a water obstacle with a depth of up to 1.2 m.

The export version of the T-90MS main battle tank of the latest Russian T-90M tank family is equipped with a single tactical-level control, CEO of the Ural Design Bureau of Transport Machine-building of Uralvagonzavod Andrey Terlikov said.

The export version of the T-90MS main battle tank has a new fire control with a set of all-day stabilized sights of the commander and the pointer. The fire control is integrated into the terminal of the controlling system to obtain tactical information in the automatic system of unit control.

The single tactical-level system was designed by Sozvezdie Concern. The first contract for the delivery to the Russian troops was signed in late 2018. Sozvezdie said the system provides information exchange between tanks in real time, a general picture of the battlefield, and creates a single information network.

The concept of the so-called netcentric war appeared in the West and has to provide information and communication supremacy over the adversary by networking all participants in combat.

Terlikov said T-90MS has a better fire density and survivability of the 125mm gun. The tank fires a broad range of munitions, including a guided missile and a high-explosive fragmentation shell with preset detonation. The weight of the tank does not exceed 50 tons.

Emergen detalles de los T-90 vietnamitas

T-90S Vietnam Tanks Have Appeared on Russian Blogs

Alexey Khlopotov, the military spokesman for the T-90s, was assembled in the Uralvagonzavod plant. Some shots show that Vietnamese soldiers are beginning to familiarize themselves with the use of the T-90S main tank on Russia's factory-level training.

While many tanks were assembled, the first vehicles were used to train Vietnamese crews at one of the Russian driver training centers (undisclosed). But the tank "Vietnam" is distinguished by color camouflage Russian car characteristics, very similar to the camouflage pattern Russian car previous car now Russia only paint a monochromatic blue.

According to military expert Alexey Khlopotov, the tanks for Vietnam were no different than the T-90S tanks in the armament of the Russian armor.

These tanks are exactly the same as the cars that the Uralvagonzavod plant supplies to Peru in 2013. On the outside, there are only minor changes, the Shtora 1M square box infrared light, air conditioning and Night vision protection armor. Experts are also uncertain, but it appears that the car was fitted with an improved automatic loading system, the AZ, designed for use with the Svinets-1 and 2 high-torped S-Type. sold to Vietnam this type of ammunition.

A few years ago, the T-90S was tested in the southern hemisphere. According to reports from sources in Latin America, the tanks are highly effective combat vehicles. The source said the guns hit the target on long distances with almost 100% accuracy.

In terms of bad weather, rain and fog, using thermal imaging glasses, the T-90s shot down targets at distances of up to 2,500 meters in Latin America.

According to expert Khlopotov, during the trial operation of the moving system, the T-90 S tank exceeded the steep slope very well and has never drifted or killed the machine or other failures.

In the past, Peruvian riders used the T-55, claiming that the T-90 was easy to drive, lightweight and very flexible. The Peruvian tanks wanted to completely replace their tanks with the T-90 but at this time, financial conditions were not yet available.

Armored forces in Vietnam are still using old T-55 tanks. Equipped with the T-90S, the combat qualities of the combat unit will be significantly enhanced during combat attack.

Vietnam Confirms Order of Russian T-90 Tanks

Vietnam has ordered 64 T-90S/SK main battle tanks (MBTs) from Russia, state-run news agencies in Hanoi confirmed on 21 July.

The reports, which cited comments from Russian defence officials who were speaking at a press conference at the MAKS-2017 aerospace exhibition in Moscow, said that the acquisition will be funded by credit provided by Moscow.

Jane’s first reported in early July that Russian tank manufacturer UralVagonZavod revealed in its annual report that it had secured an order from Vietnam for the T-90S/SK MBTs. The T-90S is the basic export model, while the 'K' postfix is a reference to command versions.

The value of the T-90 deal was not disclosed but is thought to be about USD250 million. The investment represents the first major order of new MBTs that the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) has secured for many years. Investment over the past decade and more has been firmly focused on modernising the Vietnamese navy and air force.

In addition to the MBTs, the reports said Vietnam is also positioned to procure from Russia four S-400 Triumf missile systems to boost surface-to-air missile capability and MiG-35 multirole combat aircraft to replace the Vietnam People’s Air Force’s (VPAF’s) MiG-21 fighters, which are now thought to have been retired.

The number of Su-35s that the VPAF is looking to procure was not revealed, although the service previously operated more than 30 MiG-21s and is known to require significant additional numbers of fighter aircraft to enhance air combat capability.

To support these purchases and others, the state news agencies in Hanoi reported that Russia’s defence industry is looking to expand its presence in Vietnam.
