After its public unveiling in February, the MILDEF 4×4 High Mobility Armoured Vehicle (HMAV) has successfully a first round of evaluation testing. Conducted across nine days, the MILDEF HMAV was subjected to 700 km of road testing and 300 km off-road, as well as being put through the paces on an obstacle course.

Testing was conducted by teams from the Malaysian Army and Defence Science and Technology Research Institute (STRIDE) as well as MILDEF, with driving duties performed by army personnel. The HMAV was subjected to testing such as highway endurance, fuel efficiency, load, winching, slope, mounting and dismounting, climbing and braking, including a one metre fording test.

“MILDEF is satisfied at the performance of the HMAV during this very important first round of testing. We are now planning to conduct testing at several other locations,” said Datuk Sri Mohd Nizam bin Kasa, chief executive officer of MILDEF.

Costing RM16 million to develop, the HMAV is a Malaysian product intended for both the domestic and international defence market. Designed to withstand munitions such as 7.62 mm armour piercing rounds and mines, the HMAV is built to Stanag 4569 Level 2 military standard.

Weighing 13.2 tonnes, the HMAV is powered by a Caterpillar Diesel engine displacing 7,200 cc and producing 330 hp. This gives the HMAV a power to weight ratio of 25 hp per tonne and during testing, the vehicle reached a test speed of 110 km/h.

España repara sus MRAPs

The Spanish Army Is Having Its MRAPs Repaired

Monitoring the 21st Century Asian Arms Race

SDLE won a contract worth EU 260,000 for repairs and maintenance of RG31/RG-31 Mk5 MRAPs belonging to the Spanish Army.

The military-industrial enterprise Star Defense Logistics & Engineering (SDLE) announced it was chosen by Spain’s defense ministry for providing repair and maintenance services needed by the army’s fleet of MRAPs. The contract worth EU 260,000 stipulates that SDLE should work on the vehicles at its main facility in Madrid and a secondary site in Cordoba where the army has its vehicle maintenance center. The work is expected to be completed by November 2019. A press release shared by SDLE revealed 60 of the Spanish Army’s 100 RG-31 MRAPs purchased from South Africa were sent to Afghanistan.

SDLE’s track record for supplying spare parts and other services for military vehicles has given it an enviable reputation. Last year it won successive contracts to provide maintenance for the army’s tanks and APCs.

The Spanish Army’s Lince or Lynx 4×4’s and its Iveco trucks are undergoing repairs from SDLE as well. According to the company, it has been tasked with supplying spare parts for the Lynx 4×4, which is manufactured by the Italian truckmaker Iveco, in the next three years as part of a contract worth EU 4.5 million. As a result of its thriving business, SDLE boasts its employee numbers have swelled and it’s now entering the unmanned systems market with its own drone catalog for geomapping and surveillance.

With its head office in Madrid, SDLE is a manufacturer of vehicular parts for military inventories. Depending on the size of a particular contract, SDLE can maintain and repair second and third-generation MBTs such as the Leopard 1/2, the US Patton-series, and the French AMX-30. The same applies to armored personnel carriers like the prolific M113 and its derivatives as well as self-propelled howitzers. In 2018 SDLE won a contract to upgrade the army’s Leopardo 2E MBTs for their deployment in the Baltics as part of a NATO task force. The life cycle needs of wheeled platforms, light trucks, and other heavy vehicles are within SDLE’s capabilities as well.

SDLE is the sole remaining manufacturer of the Dragoon armored 4×4. Originally a US design from the 1980s meant to serve as a reconnaissance vehicle with modular weapons, the Dragoon had limited exports and was quickly forgotten after the Cold War. The vehicle lives on in SDLE’s catalog, however, and is offered as a new build with bespoke options. The Dragoon tactical vehicle has a gross weight of 13 tons and runs on a 300 horsepower engine giving it a 105 kilometer per hour top speed. Depending on the customer’s requirements, the SDLE Dragoon supports a variety of armaments, from a mortar to a 90mm gun.

Australia vende MRAPs a Japón

Australia Confirms Additional Bushmaster Sales to Japan

JGSDF's MRAP 'Bushmaster'

Australia and Japan have outlined an intention to expand defence equipment collaboration, building on Canberra’s newly confirmed deal to sell additional Bushmaster multirole protected vehicles to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF).

The pledge to increase bilateral co-operation in military equipment, science, and technologies was made during meetings in Tokyo on 18 January between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his visiting Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull.

Turnbull used the visit to promote Australian defence exports, and he highlighted Thales Australia’s sales of the Bushmaster as an example of expanding opportunities.

Thales Australia built and supplied four Bushmaster vehicles to the JGSDF in 2014 at a cost of around AUD3.6 million (USD2.8 million) and Turnbull said that the company is scheduled to “ship another tranche of four Bushmasters” during the next few months.

9 Armoured Security Vehicles For Malbatt

IAG Guardian

BEIRUT (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Peacekeeping Mission (Malbatt) in Lebanon will receive a reinforcement of nine units of Guardian armoured security vehicles (ASV) in mid December.

Defence Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Johari Baharum said the assets which would be mobilised in January reflected the Malaysian government's commitment in the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.

"Malbatt's assets have been upgraded to suit current needs and circumstances," he told Bernama and RTM on Thursday.

According to him, Malbatt presently has 46 RPZ Condor 4x4 armoured personnel carriers at its operation centre at Marakah Camp, located about 100km from Beirut.

He said members of the peacekeeping team had also been provided with digital camouflage uniform made of good textile, bullet proof and although thick, is light and therefore comfortable to wear.

"The government is concerned for the problems and welfare of our team in Malbatt. My last visit to Lebanon was three years ago and since then there had been many changes including relations between Malbatt and the local community," he said.

Mohd Johari said Malaysia was in the process of completing the 'Malaysian bazaar' which would provide a site and opportunity for local traders here to earn their livelihood.

"Malaysia's endeavour to help improve the economy of the local community has gained the attention and support of the people in Lebanon," he added.
