JAKARTA, KOMPAS - After the construction of the third submarine which is the cooperation of RI with South Korea, Indonesia is expected to build their own submarines next. In accordance with the strategic plan to meet the minimum basic needs of the main weapon system, the Navy requires 12 submarines to carry out its main tasks.

Early this August, the Navy has just acquired a submarine KRI Nagapasa 403. KRI Nagapasa is the first submarine built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) Co Ltd for Indonesia. The 209/1400 type submarine was held with a technology transfer scheme. According to the plan, the third submarine will be built at PT PAL, Surabaya.

"Currently being implemented at PT PAL, two sections are being connected," said Head of Defense Agency Kemhan Leonardi.

According to Leonardi, PT PAL asked the government to increase investment of Rp 2.5 trillion. Of this amount, the government has invested Rp 1.5 trillion. With this fund injection, PT PAL has been able to connect submarine modules with existing technology. In addition, there are already around 200 PT PAL employees who have studied in Korea during submarine making. "It is expected that in 2008 the submarine made by PT PAL can already be tested," he said.

KRI Nagapasa 403 will arrive in Surabaya on August 28, 2017. According to the plan, the end of this year the submarine will be equipped with Black Shark weapon which is a torpedo made by Whitehead Sistemi Subacquei (WASS), Finmeccanica Company, Italy. While the submarine battery will be made in the country. "The weapon must be adapted to the submarine configuration and technical specifications needed," said Widodo.
