The first of nine new air traffic control (ATC) and surveillance radars for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is expected to become operational in November, German manufacturer Hensoldt has disclosed.

The company said in a 9 August statement that the first of the Airport Surveillance Radar - New Generation (ASR-NG) multibeam 3D radars has been set to work at RAAF Base Tindal in Australia's Northern Territory. This is likely to lead to site acceptance testing, with operational status anticipated to be achieved in November.

Site installation of a second ASR-NG has been completed at the Army Aviation Centre at Oakey in Queensland, and interim systems are being installed at RAAF Base East Sale in Victoria and the Naval Air Station HMAS Albatross at Nowra south of Sydney.
