Thailand's military government has approved the Royal Thai Air Force's (RTAF's) plan to purchase an initial four advanced jet trainer (AJT)/light attack aircraft to replace its ageing fleet of Aero L-39ZA Albatros aircraft.

RTAF commander-in-chief Air Chief Marshal Treetos Sonjaeng announced on 13 December that the programme has received government funding of THB3.7 billion (USD113 million). He added that the RTAF is currently considering proposals from several countries. A decision on the procurement is expected in 2015.

IHS Jane's understands that platforms under consideration include the US's Textron AirLand Scorpion, Russia's Yakovlev Yak-130, Italy's Alenia Aermacchi M-346, China's Hongdu L-15, and Korea Aerospace Industries' TA-50: the light attack version of the T-50 Golden Eagle AJT.
