In a series of dawn raids on April 15, elite German police units arrested four Tajik nationals suspected of being part of an Islamic State terror cell preparing to carry out attacks against US forces on German soil.

German prosecutors said that the four arrested in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia set up the cell along with another citizen of Tajikistan who is already in jail.

The group reportedly swore allegiance to the terrorist organization last year, received instructions from senior Islamic State leaders in Afghanistan and Syria, and conducted surveillance of US Air Force bases.

The prosecutors said the cell was also planning to target individuals they considered critical of Islam.

The group had ordered bombmaking materials online and was already in possession of firearms and ammunition, according to the prosecutors.

Germany's security services are said to estimate that there are over 10,000 radical Islamists in the country.
