Thai Government Proposes Small Increase in Defence Spending

Thailand's military government has proposed a 2017 defence budget of THB214 billion (USD6 billion), a nominal increase of 3% over military spending in 2016.

The proposed budget represents around 1.5% of GDP and 8% of the total government expenditure during the year.

While the defence spending proportion has remained relatively constant in recent years, the 2017 budget increase is the lowest since the government came to power following the military coup in May 2014.

Nominal defence spending increases in 2015 and 2016 were 5% and 7% respectively. The decline in growth in 2017 can be attributed to the country's sluggish economy.
